Lady Behave! is a comedy film from 1937 that takes place in the 1920s in New York City. The movie follows the story of Patricia 'Pat' Pemberton, played by Sally Eilers, a young woman who works in publicity in a department store. Pat is ambitious and determined to succeed, but her boss, Mr. Haskell, played by Ralph Bellamy, does not take her seriously because she is a woman.
One day, Pat overhears Mr. Haskell's plan to hire a man to represent the new line of men's suits in order to increase sales. Pat decides to dress up as a man to audition for the job and is hired by Mr. Haskell, who believes that 'Patrick' is the perfect candidate. Pat is ecstatic at the opportunity to prove herself, but things quickly become complicated when she falls in love with one of the models, Terry Clayton, played by Neil Hamilton.
As the story progresses, Pat tries to balance her professional and personal life while keeping her secret identity hidden. She becomes increasingly concerned that her true identity will be revealed, especially when she is pursued by the department store's head of security, Johnnie Malone, played by Joseph Schildkraut, who suspects that something is amiss.
Lady Behave! is a charming and lighthearted film that combines elements of romance, comedy, and the classic 'mistaken identity' trope. Sally Eilers delivers a delightful performance as Pat, capturing both her determination and vulnerability with ease. Neil Hamilton is charming as Terry Clayton, and their on-screen chemistry is palpable.
Joseph Schildkraut brings humor to the film as Johnnie Malone, the bumbling detective who grows increasingly suspicious of Pat. His physical comedy is spot-on, and he provides many of the film's funniest moments. Ralph Bellamy is excellent as Mr. Haskell, the chauvinistic boss who learns to appreciate Pat's talent over the course of the movie.
The film's supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Louise Fazenda as Mrs. Martin, the busybody landlady who becomes embroiled in Pat's scheme, and Jimmy Durante as himself, providing comic relief in a nightclub scene.
The movie is set in the 1920s, and the period detail is impeccable. From the costumes to the sets, Lady Behave! captures the glamour and excitement of the era. The film also features several musical numbers, including an excellent dance sequence between Pat and Terry.
Overall, Lady Behave! is a fun and engaging film that is sure to delight audiences. It's a classic romantic comedy that still holds up today, thanks to its talented cast and clever writing. The movie's themes of gender equality and the challenges faced by women in the workplace remain relevant, making Lady Behave! a timeless classic.
