As one of the most famous legends in Mexican folklore, La Llorona has been the subject of countless films, books, and songs. In the 2007 movie La Verdadera Historia De La Llorona, filmmakers attempt to tell the true story behind the myth. Starring Brenda Castro, Eleazar Garcia Jr., Antonio Lozano, and Erick Martin, the movie combines historical research with elements of horror to create a unique and chilling interpretation of the legend.

The movie begins with a group of teenagers who decide to explore an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of town. Inside, they discover an old diary that once belonged to a woman named Maria. The diary tells the story of a young woman who falls in love with a wealthy landowner named Miguel. Maria and Miguel have two sons together, but their happiness is short-lived when Miguel decides to leave Maria for a younger, more beautiful woman.

Desperate to win back her husband's love, Maria seeks the help of a local witch. The witch promises to make Maria more beautiful than any other woman and to make Miguel return to her. However, there is a catch - the spell requires that Maria sacrifice her two children. Maria, blinded by love and desperation, agrees to the plan.

When Miguel learns of Maria's crimes, he turns her over to the authorities. Maria is sentenced to death by drowning, and her ghost is said to haunt the rivers and lakes of Mexico, crying out for her lost children.

The teens are initially skeptical of the diary's claims, but soon strange things start happening around them. They hear the sound of a woman weeping in the night and catch glimpses of a white-robed figure wandering the halls of the mansion. Soon, they realize that they are in grave danger and must uncover the truth behind Maria's story before it's too late.

La Verdadera Historia De La Llorona is not your typical horror movie. While it has its fair share of jump scares and unsettling imagery, it is also a thoughtful exploration of the power of love and its ability to drive people to do terrible things. The film also delves into the complex history of Mexico and the impact that colonization had on its people and culture.

The standout performance in the movie comes from Brenda Castro, who plays Maria with a heartbreaking vulnerability. Castro's portrayal of a woman trapped by her own obsessions is both sympathetic and terrifying. Eleazar Garcia Jr. is also compelling as Miguel, the landowner caught between his love for Maria and his duty to society.

The filmmakers do an excellent job of recreating the gothic atmosphere of the mansion, with its creaky staircases, dusty bookshelves, and flickering candles. The cinematography is moody and evocative, adding to the film's overall sense of dread.

One minor quibble with the movie is that it occasionally feels like it's trying to do too much. In addition to the main story of Maria and Miguel, the film also touches on themes of female empowerment, environmentalism, and the legacy of colonialism. While these are all important issues, they don't always feel fully integrated into the plot.

That being said, La Verdadera Historia De La Llorona is a stylish and engrossing horror movie that offers a refreshing take on a classic legend. It's well worth checking out for fans of the genre, as well as anyone interested in Mexican history and culture.
