La Leyenda de la Llorona is a 2011 Mexican 3D computer-animated fantasy horror film directed by Alberto Rodriguez. It is based on the legend of La Llorona, a weeping woman ghost who kidnaps children. The film follows a young boy named Leo who moves to a new town with his family. On the first day at his new school, Leo meets a mysterious new classmate named Claudia, who warns him about the ghostly legend of La Llorona. According to legend, La Llorona was once a beautiful woman named Maria who fell in love with a wealthy man who would not marry her because she had two sons from a previous marriage. Heartbroken and crazed, Maria threw her young sons into a river and drowned them to be with her lover. When the man rejected her again, she threw herself into the river in despair. Maria's spirit wanders the riversides weeping and searching for her lost children. She kidnaps wandering children who resemble her own, hoping to replace what she lost.

Leo starts having frightening encounters with La Llorona, but his family does not believe him. With the help of his new friends Claudia and Wilson, Leo researches the legend and works to uncover the mystery behind La Llorona's curse. They discover that La Llorona has returned to their town because construction work on a new housing development has disturbed her resting place. Now her spirit torments the children in the area. Leo, Claudia and Wilson bravely decide they must put La Llorona to rest for good before more children are taken. But they soon realize that the vengeful and dangerous ghost will not rest until she takes Leo to replace her own sons.

In a climatic final act, La Llorona lures Leo to a gloomy riverside at night. There, Leo confronts the ghostly weeping woman for a final showdown. With some quick thinking and help from his friends, Leo defeats La Llorona in an exciting supernatural battle. The evil spirit dissolves into the river, appeased at last. With La Llorona's curse lifted, Leo and his friends return home safely. Though wary of her legend, normal life resumes in their town.

Filled with suspense and supernatural thrills, La Leyenda de la Llorona brings Mexico's chilling famous folklore to life. The young protagonists prove brave and resourceful as they unravel the mystery of La Llorona and put her tortured spirit to rest. The movie blends rich Mexican cultural elements with a spooky paranormal tale children and families will enjoy. Vibrant animation, sympathetic characters and an eerie mythical antagonist make La Leyenda de la Llorona a unique animated horror film.
