Krull is a fantasy adventure film released in 1983 directed by Peter Yates. The film stars Ken Marshall, Lysette Anthony, and Freddie Jones. The movie is set in the fictional planet Krull, which is under attack from an evil alien entity known as The Beast. The Beast kidnaps the princess Lyssa (Lysette Anthony), and her fiancée Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) begins a quest to rescue her.

The story of Krull begins when a race of aliens known as the Slayers, with their leader The Beast (voiced by Trevor Martin), attack the planet Krull. They overwhelm the defenders of the world who were no match for the advanced technology of the Slayers. They invade the castle of King Turold (Freddie Jones), killing many of his men and capturing his daughter, Princess Lyssa.

Prince Colwyn, whom Princess Lyssa was betrothed to, and who is the only hope for defeating the Beast, sets out on a quest to rescue Princess Lyssa from the Slayers' fortress, the Black Fortress. Colwyn's quest is aided by a group of outlaws he met along the way.

He's joined by the shape-shifting magician Ergo the Magnificent (David Battley), the giant Rell the Cyclops (Bernard Bresslaw), the thief Titch (Alun Armstrong), the old warhorse Kegan (Liam Neeson), and Torquil (Amanda Kirby), the widow of an outlaw who Colwyn killed in a fight.

The group faces many obstacles on their journey, both from the Slayers and the treacherous terrain they must navigate to reach the Black Fortress. The film takes place in a magical realm where Colwyn and his companions must battle with supernatural creatures, including the Eclipsers, fire mares, and the Slayers' deadly assassins.

Krull is a wonderfully crafted fantasy adventure film with excellent special effects, a captivating plot, and impressive performances by its cast. The action is fast-paced, and the film keeps the viewer engaged from start to finish.

The film's most significant strength is its world-building. The magical world of Krull is richly imagined, with its own unique mythology, culture, and set of laws that govern it. The film's visual effects add a sense of wonder and magic to the world, from the shape-shifting Ergo to the Black Fortress's terrifying entrance.

Colwyn is the central character in the film, and his quest to save Princess Lyssa from the clutches of the Beast is the driving force behind the story. Ken Marshall turns in an excellent performance as the brave prince who is willing to risk everything to save the woman he loves.

Lysette Anthony is also exceptional in her role as Princess Lyssa, showcasing both bravery and vulnerability throughout the film. Her chemistry with Ken Marshall is palpable, and their romance is one of the film's most endearing elements.

The supporting cast is also noteworthy, with David Battley's portrayal of Ergo providing much of the film's comic relief. Freddie Jones is an imposing presence as King Turold, while Liam Neeson and Bernard Bresslaw add depth to their respective roles.

Krull features some of the best acting in any '80s fantasy film, and the performances all around help to make the movie feel authentic and engaging.

The film's musical score, composed by James Horner, is also a significant highlight. Horner’s score brings majesty and emotion to the film, heightening the action and adding an extra layer of intrigue to the story.

Overall, Krull is a classic example of a great fantasy adventure film. It captivates the imagination, brings the viewer to an expansive, mythic world filled with magic, danger, mythical beasts, and heroes of old. It's a film without much talk of morals, but its prevalent themes of courage, loyalty, and hope are played up for all they're worth.

Krull is a 1983 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 57 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1 and a MetaScore of 45.
