Koyla is a Bollywood movie released in 1997, directed by Rakesh Roshan and produced by Rakesh Roshan Productions. The movie revolves around the character of Shah Rukh Khan, who plays the role of Shankar, a young man who is mute and deaf. Shankar lives a life of servitude and is exploited by his cruel owner, Raja Saab (played by Amrish Puri), who mistreats him and violates his dignity.
The story takes a turn when a beautiful young woman, Gauri (played by Madhuri Dixit), comes to the village and catches Shankar's eye. Gauri is a fiery and independent woman who is not afraid to speak her mind, and she quickly realizes that Shankar has been mistreated and abused by Raja Saab. She decides to help Shankar escape from his prison and offers him a job at her father's hotel.
As Shankar starts to work at the hotel, Gauri and he develop a close friendship that soon turns into love. However, Raja Saab is not willing to let Shankar go so easily and sends his goons after him. Shankar and Gauri have to fight against Raja Saab's criminal empire and also against their own insecurities and fears to stay together.
Koyla is a high-octane action movie that combines romance, drama, and intense fight sequences. It is a highly stylized movie with exotic locations, elaborate sets, and colorful costumes. The movie's music, composed by Rajesh Roshan, is also a big highlight, with several memorable songs that have become iconic in Indian cinema.
Shah Rukh Khan delivers a powerful performance as Shankar, a character who is physically handicapped but possesses great strength and courage. He is able to convey a lot of emotion through his facial expressions, and his chemistry with Madhuri Dixit is electric.
Madhuri Dixit is also excellent in the movie, playing a character who is both vulnerable and strong. She is able to handle the emotional scenes with ease and also shines in the dance sequences. The supporting cast, including Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever, and Ashok Saraf, all do a great job in their respective roles.
Koyla is a movie that was ahead of its time in terms of its treatment of the protagonist's disability. It portrays Shankar not as a victim but as a hero who is able to overcome his limitations and fight for his rights. The movie also tackles themes of love, freedom, and human dignity in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Overall, Koyla is a must-watch movie for fans of Bollywood cinema. It is a well-crafted movie with great performances, memorable music, and thrilling action sequences. It has remained a favorite among Bollywood fans for over two decades and continues to be a popular choice for movie nights.
