Frantisek Louka was once a successful cellist with the Czech Philharmonic, until the communist authorities listed him as politically unreliable. Now he must resign himself to playing at funerals in order to make a living. When not playing, the middle-aged musician and dedicated bachelor pursues women. One day, the opportunity to make a good deal of money is presented to Louka. All he has to do is marry a Russian woman. But the marriage is fake. The woman just wants Czechoslovakian citizenship in order to join her boyfriend in West Germany. She does this, but leaves her five-year-old son, Kolya, with Louka.
The lifelong bachelor is unprepared to care for a child. Making this situation more difficult is the fact Louka and Kolya do not speak the same language. To make matters worse, Kolya is suffering from an illness and the authorities are investigating his marriage to Kolya's mother. For a man who has only had to take care of himself his entire life, can he give Kolya the care he needs and stay out of prison?
Kolya is a 1996 music movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.7.
