In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, Kit Kittredge (Abigail Breslin) is a little girl from Cincinnati, Ohio who dreams of becoming a writer. She lives with her family, who owns a boarding house and rents rooms to people who are in need. Kit is a bright and curious young girl who has a passion for journalism and writing, inspired by her father's career as a newspaper editor. She even writes her own stories and sends them out to various publications, hoping to get them published.
However, the family's financial situation takes a turn for the worse when her father (Chris O'Donnell) loses his job and has to leave home to find work elsewhere. Kit, her mother (Julia Ormond), and her brother (Max Thieriot) must take in boarders to make ends meet. The situation becomes even more complicated when some of their boarders start to disappear, and money goes missing. Kit is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and find out what's happening to the people in her community.
As Kit tries to solve the mystery, she befriends various characters, including a young hobo named Will who is falsely accused of theft (Max Thieriot), a kindly librarian (Joan Cusack), and a magician who performs at her boarding house (Stanley Tucci). With the help of her friends, Kit uncovers a plot to sabotage the upcoming election and restore her father's journalistic reputation.
The movie is based on the American Girl book series and dolls, and was praised for its positive portrayal of female empowerment and intelligence. Breslin's performance was particularly lauded, as she captured the spirit of Kit Kittredge and brought the character to the screen with great authenticity.
The film also explores themes of poverty and hardship during the Great Depression, as well as the importance of community and friendship during difficult times. Despite the serious subject matter, the film still has plenty of heart and humor, especially in the interactions between Kit and her friends.
