Kiss of Death is a 1995 American thriller film, directed by Barbet Schroeder and starring David Caruso, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicolas Cage, and Helen Hunt. The film is a remake of the 1947 film of the same name. David Caruso plays Jimmy Kilmartin, a former criminal who has turned his life around and is now a family man. However, his past comes back to haunt him when he is forced to commit a crime to save his own life. He is caught and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
While in prison, Kilmartin meets a ruthless and dangerous criminal named Little Junior Brown, played by Nicolas Cage. Brown takes an interest in Kilmartin and offers him a job as his right-hand man once he is released from prison. Kilmartin is initially reluctant, but eventually agrees in order to provide for his family.
Once Kilmartin is released from prison, he tries to adjust to life on the outside while working for Brown. However, things quickly spiral out of control when Kilmartin becomes a witness in a case against Brown, and is forced to choose between his loyalty to Brown and his duty to testify truthfully.
Samuel L. Jackson plays Calvin Hart, a tough-as-nails detective who has been trying to bring down Brown for years. Hart takes Kilmartin under his wing and urges him to testify against Brown, promising to keep him and his family safe in exchange for his help.
Helen Hunt plays Kilmartin's wife, Bev, who is struggling to keep their family together while her husband is in prison and afterwards. She is initially supportive of her husband's attempts to go straight, but as things get more dangerous, she begins to question whether their family's safety is worth the price they are paying.
Kiss of Death is a tension-filled thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. The film has a gritty realism to it, and the performances by the cast are all top-notch. David Caruso is especially effective at portraying the inner conflict of his character, torn between his loyalty to Brown and his moral duty to do the right thing.
The film's climax is a heart-pounding chase scene that takes place on the streets of New York City. It's a fitting end to a movie that is all about the consequences of one's actions, and the lengths people will go to in order to protect the ones they love.
Overall, Kiss of Death is a solid thriller with strong performances and a gripping storyline. It's a testament to the talent of its director and cast, and is definitely worth watching for fans of the genre.
