Released in 2006, King Cobra is a science-fiction horror movie that involves a giant snake escaping the laboratory and wreaking havoc into the outside world. The movie stars Pat Morita, Joseph Ruskin, and Courtney Gains and was directed, produced, and written by the combined efforts of David and Scott Hillenbrand. The film lasts for a total of 93 minutes.
The storyline begins with a genetics experimentation facility operated by Dr. Irwin Burns. The laboratory, which was created to manage researching of aggressive behaviors, encountered an accident that led to the outburst of fire and explosions. During the accident, the laboratory's 30-foot long genetically modified hybrid snake experiment managed to escape. The snake experiment, which is named "Seth" by the scientists, is a mix of Asian King Cobra and an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.
Now set free with a potent aggressive-inducing drug, the experimental hybrid snake starts hunting its food in the countryside. At first, Seth hunts and eats only woodland prey. But as the 30-foot snake grows, he is snow unsatisfied with his forest meals and now starts preying on the settlers of a small town called Filmore. The town's doctor, Kragen, performs an autopsy on one of the previously recovered bodies and identifies that the fatality was caused by an inordinate killer, which Kragen later concludes a huge snake.
Kragen along with law enforcement chief Jo Biddle visit the Mayor's office and demands to reschedule a nearing town brewery festival. Unable to prove their theory that a huge snake is lurking within the woodlands where the town festival is staged to occur, the town mayor refuses. In addition to lack of evidence, the yearly brewery festival largely profits from tourists who visit the town hence the mayor cannot merely cancel or reschedule it. As a result, Biddle and Kagen have to capture the snake before it finds its next victim.
After several more fatalities, the town begins to fear for their safety. They call in a snake hunter named Nick Hashimoto who is played by Pat Morita. Nick has been bitten by snakes several times that his body now harbors antibodies of snake venom.
King Cobra features a promising visual effects with the help of the Chiodo Brothers, who also helped with the character creations for the hit animation series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The movie also sports a guest appearance by Erik Estrada who plays a gay brewery advertising professional.
King Cobra is a 1998 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 33 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.2.
