In 2007, the South Korean film industry introduced the comedy Kidnapping Granny K to enthusiastic audiences. Directed by Sang-ho Yeon, with a screenplay by Jung-bum Shin, it tells the story of a trio of inept criminals planning to kidnap an elderly woman for ransom. The film opens with the introduction of Kang In-ja (Moon-hee Na) who lives her life truthfully and takes care of her disabled son Oh Kyu (Jeong-min Park). Meanwhile, three young men - Du-hwan (Seong-jin Kang), Keum-bok (Hae-Jin Yoo) and Min-goo (Ji-eun Lim) - who are broke and desperate for money, decide to carry out a kidnapping plan they consider foolproof.

Their target is none other than Granny K, the matriarch of a wealthy family, who they believe will be able to pay the ransom. They follow her to the bank and kidnap her in a park, but things do not go as planned. In-ja proves to be more resourceful than they think and proves to be a tough hostage to handle.

As they drive to the location they have set up as a makeshift hideout, they realize that they have made a severe mistake, as Granny K is not as defenseless as they thought. During the ride, they soon realize that their situation has become increasingly dire as the granny refuses to let them accomplish their mission.

The trio of kidnappers bungles the job from the beginning, and their incompetence only worsens as Granny K's persistence and courage foil their schemes at every turn. They get more desperate, dysfunctional and hysterical, only to realize that they have got way more than they bargained for.

As the story unfolds, we see how the grandmother's reputation for being a hard worker and lively spirit is unmatched. Granny K is amusingly tenacious, and the juxtaposition between her and the captured robbers creates a whimsical comedic effect. A bond between the abductors and abductee forms, and we see how the trio, deprived of a proper upbringing, learn a lot about life from Granny K — her moral teaching that no good deed goes unrewarded.

The film relies on witty dialogue and clever situational humor to keep the audience engaged. It also blends elements of action and adventure, making for a wild ride that swings between slapstick humor and more poignant, reflective moments.

Moon-hee Na's incredible performance as Grandma K, who is both calm and tough in equal measure, is the heart of the film, and the interplay between her and the kidnappers is utterly delightful. She brings warmth to the screen, making it impossible not to root for her throughout the film. Similarly, Seong-jin Kang, Hae-Jin Yoo, and Ji-eun Lim are fantastic in their roles, creating believable, multi-dimensional characters.

Overall, Kidnapping Granny K is a lighthearted and touching film that delivers on both heart and humor. The perfect blend of wit and whimsy, it's a must-watch for fans of comedy and action/ adventure films alike. It is no wonder the film was so successful when it was released, and it remains a classic of South Korean cinema.
