Kate Plus Ten is a charming 1938 film that follows the misadventures of the recently widowed Kate Durrant, played by Genevieve Tobin. Kate has inherited a large fortune from her late husband and decides to purchase a magnificent old house in the English countryside. However, the house comes with a most unusual stipulation – it must be occupied by at least ten people at all times, or it will be confiscated by the bank.
Despite hiring a staff of loyal servants, Kate struggles to find enough residents to keep the house occupied. She turns to her old friend, Jerry (Jack Hulbert), for help, and he suggests that she hold a charity bazaar on the grounds of the house. The bazaar is a success, and soon Kate has ten guests staying at her house.
The cast of characters includes a wide variety of personalities, each with their own unique backstory. Noel Madison plays the shifty Frank Lawton, a con artist who has been posing as a wealthy businessman. He becomes one of Kate's guests, and chaos ensues when his true identity is revealed. Also among the guests are Lady Carol (Lyn Harding), who is struggling to maintain her social status, and the charming George Standish (Barry Mackay), who has an eye for Kate.
As the guests settle into their new home, their personalities clash, and hilarity ensues. There are flirtations, misunderstandings, and comedic mishaps galore. Jerry tries to keep the guests under control, but even he is unable to stop the chaos when a group of gypsies arrive on the scene.
As the film progresses, Kate finds herself drawn to George, but she also worries about what will happen when the tenancy agreement for the house runs out. She fears that the bank will take possession of the house and all her guests will be left homeless. Together with Jerry, Kate hatches a plan to save the house and keep her guests together.
Kate Plus Ten is a charming film that is both funny and heartwarming. The performances are excellent, particularly Genevieve Tobin as Kate, who brings a warm, caring energy to the role. Jack Hulbert is also excellent as the bumbling but lovable Jerry, and Noel Madison delivers a wonderfully slimy performance as the duplicitous Frank Lawton.
The film is set in a stunning country house, and the cinematography is beautiful, making great use of the lush surrounding landscape. The costumes and sets are also a highlight, with attention paid to every detail, from the elegant ball gowns to the intricate floral arrangements.
One of the great strengths of Kate Plus Ten is its cast of characters. While the film is ultimately Kate's story, each of the supporting players is given enough screen time to develop their own unique persona. Their interactions with each other are what make the film so entertaining, and watching them clash and collide is endlessly fun.
Overall, Kate Plus Ten is a classic example of British comedy at its best. It's a film that will make you laugh, cry, and fall in love with its charming cast of characters. If you're a fan of classic cinema, then this is definitely a film that's worth checking out.
