Kalippattam is a 1993 Malayalam movie starring Mohanlal, Urvashi, and Kalpana in lead roles, directed by Venu Nagavally. This drama movie revolves around Chandramohan, a famous singer who lost his voice due to his alcohol and drug addiction. The story follows his journey as he tries to get his life back on track with the help of his friend and well-wisher, Suma.
The movie starts with Chandramohan (Mohanlal) being invited to a recording studio to sing for an upcoming album. However, to everyone's surprise, he is unable to sing due to his voice being hoarse. It is then revealed that his addiction to alcohol and drugs led to the deterioration of his voice. Faced with this harsh reality, Chandramohan becomes depressed and starts to distance himself from everyone.
In an attempt to help Chandramohan, his close friend Kurup (Nedumudi Venu) takes him to his village. Kurup introduces him to Suma (Urvashi), a school teacher who is a big fan of Chandramohan's music. Suma takes it upon herself to help Chandramohan overcome his addiction and regain his voice. She helps him detox and they start to develop a close bond. However, Chandramohan's past catches up with him in the form of his ex-lover, Nalini (Kalpana), who is also a drug addict. Nalini tries to lure Chandramohan back into his old ways, but he resists with the support of Suma.
As the story progresses, Chandramohan begins to regain his voice and soon becomes the talk of the town. He invites Suma to attend his comeback concert and publicly acknowledges her contribution towards his recovery. However, Nalini makes one last attempt to destroy Chandramohan's life, but for the first time, Chandramohan takes control of his life and puts an end to her manipulation.
Kalippattam is a realistic portrayal of addiction and the struggle to overcome it. The movie effectively captures the emotions of the characters and highlights the importance of love and friendship in overcoming addiction. Mohanlal's performance is brilliant as he showcases Chandramohan's journey from a famous singer to an addict, and then to a man who regains his voice and self-respect. Urvashi's portrayal of Suma is equally impressive, as she portrays the character with a mix of compassion and determination.
The songs in the movie, composed by Johnson, are memorable and add a lot of value to the story. 'Maane Madhura Karimbe' and 'Snehithane Snehithane' are two popular tracks from the movie that are still loved by fans.
The movie also highlights the social issues of addiction and the stigma attached to it. It shows the struggles of not only the addict but also the people around them who try to help them. Kalippattam is a movie that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their age or background. It is a poignant story that leaves the audience with a message of hope and resilience.
