In Jurassic City, directed by Sean Cain, the world has changed in the worst possible way. Los Angeles has been turned into a quarantined wasteland, enclosed behind a huge wall to stop people from entering or leaving. Of course, the city has a new problem to deal with other than the infected people within: a pack of prehistoric creatures are on the loose and wreaking havoc.
As the movie begins, a team of crooks, who have robbed a bank and are making their escape, crash-land inside the wall of the city. They soon find out that life inside the wall is full of madness and danger. The city is run by a military leader, Colonel Perez (Vernon Wells), who is determined to keep the population safe by any means necessary. Despite the Colonel's best efforts, the deadly Dinosaurs roam free and pose a significant threat to the people trapped locked up behind the wall.
The prisoners, who have taken over the deserted police station inside the wall, are initially dismissed as the lowest level of criminals and nothing to worry about. However, as the movie progresses, we see the prisoners' minds change towards the idea of becoming heroes in the face of an oncoming disaster. They start to band together and find themselves in alliances they never thought possible.
Soon, the masses behind the wall realize that they have a common enemy, and they desperately need to work together to fight them off. The prisoners begin their fight against the prehistoric enemies and work alongside other groups in order to overcome them. They realize that the only way they have any hope is to fight their way through the city and take down these dangerous creatures before it's too late.
Most of the action takes place within the confines of the quarantined city, where CGI Dinosaurs roam free to wreak havoc. The movie's set design genuinely makes you feel as though you too are trapped with the prisoners and all left to face the doom. Whether it's the sightings of the Dinosaurs in the distance or the damage they create with their vicious attacks, the film succeeds in making it look realistic and terrifying.
Although the film's storyline is straightforward, it works well in its favor due to the fast-paced action and extravagant visuals. The film's style will remind you of B-movie goodness, with its constant on-the-run, full-throttle storytelling. The performances are satisfactory, one of which includes Ray Wise as the Sheriff of the quarantined city, providing an adept supporting role in driving the plot forward.
The pacing of the film is lightening quick, which leaves little time for the characters to develop significantly, but viewers will recognize that this isn't what this script is about. This movie delivers on action, excitement, and its right to belong among the wide selection of stories about Dinosaurs that infest the earth.
Jurassic City is a gem of a discovery amongst independent cinema. It provides a sense of nostalgia for the dinosaur-loving kid living in all of us, mixed with the thrill of the chase and the fight for survival. The film will keep you entertained, keep your eyes locked on the screen and ready for action, and provide an excellent perfect weekend-watch without ever trying to be anything more than what it is - a B-movie gem that will leave you with a smile on your face.
