Journey to the Center of Time is a 1967 sci-fi movie directed by David L. Hewitt. While the movie does not have a critical recognition, it is an entertaining and fun movie to watch. The movie starts with a group of scientists working at the futuristic Kronos Corporation. They have developed a new technology called the "Time Tunnel," a device that can transport people through time. However, the Time Tunnel is not complete, and the scientists need a rare mineral called "grommite" to finish it.
Rick, the driver for the Kronos Corporation, becomes the group's unwilling hero when they accidentally transport him to the year 1547. There, he meets Leonardo da Vinci, who gives him a piece of grommite. Rick quickly returns to the present day, and the scientists use the grommite to complete the Time Tunnel.
The team decides to use the Time Tunnel to solve a mystery. They have received a strange message from the future, warning them of an imminent disaster. The scientists enter the Time Tunnel and travel to the year 2071. They find a dystopian world where everyone lives under an oppressive society called the "New Order." They meet a resistance fighter named Captain Masters, played by Scott Brady, who becomes their guide.
The scientists discover that the New Order was created by one of their fellow scientists, Walter Petra, who went rogue and used the Time Tunnel to change history. Petra believes that he can create a perfect world by controlling the past, present, and future. The Kronos team must stop Petra before he destroys the timeline and enslaves the planet.
The movie features an entertaining mix of futuristic gadgets, adventure, and cheesy special effects. The Time Tunnel itself is a fantastic piece of set design, with an impressive looking chamber that swirls with colorful lights.
The acting is hit and miss, with some actors giving wooden performances, while others embrace the campy tone of the movie. Scott Brady, in particular, stands out as the roguish Captain Masters, bringing a sense of swashbuckling charm to his character.
The real star of the movie, however, is the script. The time travel shenanigans, the dystopian future, and the final showdown with Walter Petra are all expertly plotted to create an engaging and exciting story.
Journey to the Center of Time is not a masterpiece of the science fiction genre, but it's a fun and entertaining movie that deserves more recognition. If you're a fan of cheesy sci-fi movies from the 60s, this is a must-see.
