The film follows the biblical story of Joseph, who is the favorite son of Jacob in the land of Canaan. Joseph's brothers, who are also the sons of Jacob, become envious of Joseph's colorful coat and his tendency to be favored by their father. They decide to sell him into slavery, and Joseph is taken to Egypt, where he is sold to a wealthy Egyptian named Potiphar.
Joseph's talent for interpreting dreams soon gets him noticed by Potiphar's wife, who attempts to seduce him. Joseph resists her advances, and as a result, he is thrown into prison. While in prison, Joseph meets two prisoners who have also had dreams, and he is able to interpret them.
Eventually, Joseph's ability to interpret dreams leads him to Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt. Pharaoh has had a dream that he cannot understand, and Joseph is able to interpret it for him. The dream indicates that there will be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Pharaoh is impressed by Joseph's ability and makes him his second-in-command.
As the famine ravages the land, Joseph's brothers come to Egypt looking for food. They do not recognize Joseph, who is now dressed in royal attire and has become a powerful ruler.
