Jeff, Who Lives at Home is a 2011 American comedy-drama film that follows the story of a man named Jeff, played by Jason Segel, who lives in his mother's basement. He believes in destiny and spends his days watching M. Night Shyamalan's movie Signs repeatedly, waiting for a sign to guide him towards his purpose in life. Jeff's brother Pat, played by Ed Helms, is struggling with his own problems. He is stuck in a failing marriage, has a failing job, and is constantly trying to prove his masculinity to the world. His wife Linda, played by Judy Greer, is fed up with him and the marriage is on the rocks.
The movie starts with Jeff receiving a mysterious phone call asking for "Kevin". This sets him off on a search for the elusive Kevin, which he believes is a sign from destiny. Pat is on his own mission to purchase a luxurious Porsche, despite the fact that he's broke and his wife has specifically asked him not to spend money they don't have.
As Jeff sets out on his mission, Pat asks him for a favor, to repair a broken shutter on the side of their mother's house. What starts as a seemingly small and mundane task turns into a wild adventure that brings the three of them closer than ever before, as they embark on a journey of introspection and self-discovery.
Throughout the movie, Jeff's beliefs about destiny and his search for Kevin are juxtaposed against Pat's desperate pursuit for material success, leading to amusing encounters and unexpected revelations about their relationship. Meanwhile, Linda is also going through a personal transformation, as she discovers new possibilities for life outside of her loveless marriage.
The film's themes revolve around the idea of destiny and the importance of finding one's purpose in life. Jeff's naive and innocent perspective is both endearing and thought-provoking, as he teaches his brother and his sister-in-law valuable lessons about life and love.
The performances by the cast are impeccable, particularly Jason Segal's portrayal of Jeff. His child-like innocence and unwavering faith in destiny bring a fresh perspective to the movie, while Ed Helms and Judy Greer deliver poignant and nuanced performances.
