In the movie Jackpot from 2011, we meet a group of co-workers from a factory for Christmas dinner in a sleepy Norwegian town. Oscar Svendsen, played by Kyrre Hellum, has a troubled past and on this particular night, he wins the jackpot in a football pool worth 1.7 million kroner. This is a much-needed stroke of luck for Oscar, who's struggled with gambling problems before, and he's thrilled to have won. However, things take a dark and violent turn as he's unable to account for the winning ticket and a group of unsavory criminals come into play.
We also meet the police officer Solør, played by Henrik Mestad, and his colleague who investigate a mass murder at the factory. They soon discover there's a connection between the murder and Oscar's win, and the case takes a complex turn as they dig deeper into the lives of the suspects. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn more about Oscar's past and the people who he's affiliated with, including his former cellmate and best friend Thor, played by Mads Ousdal.
The movie is a dark comedy thriller, and director Magnus Martens does an excellent job of keeping the audience guessing throughout the film. The characters are all intriguing and colorful, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The visual style is gritty, with a lot of handheld camera work, which adds to the chaotic and violent nature of the story. The performances from the cast are all top-notch, with some standout moments from Hellum and Ousdal.
One of the most impressive things about Jackpot is how the film manages to balance its dark and violent subject matter with humor. There are some truly hilarious moments in the film, but they never detract from the tension or drama of the story. The comedy is mostly derived from the absurdity of the situations that the characters find themselves in, and the film never undermines the seriousness of the violence or the emotional struggles of Oscar.
The film's script, written by Jo Nesbø, is a smart and complex piece of storytelling. The characters are all flawed in interesting ways, and the script does an excellent job of exploring their motivations and relationships. There are also some clever structural choices in the film, with the use of flashbacks and different perspectives adding depth to the story.
Overall, Jackpot is a highly entertaining and engaging thriller that's well worth watching. The combination of dark comedy, crime drama, and clever storytelling make it a film that will stay with viewers long after it's finished. The performances from the cast are fantastic, and the direction and visual style are all top-notch. If you're a fan of crime thrillers or dark comedies, then Jackpot is definitely a film you won't want to miss.
