Invasion of Astro-Monster is a futuristic space adventure movie that was released in 1965. The film was directed by the legendary Ishiro Honda and written by Shinichi Sekizawa. The film stars Nick Adams, Akira Takarada, Jun Tazaki, and several other notable actors. The story begins with an unidentified flying object appearing near Earth, which is monitored by the World Space Agency. The officials attempt to establish contact with the aliens but to no avail. This prompts the WSA to enlist the help of the Japanese Space Exploration Center (JSEC). JSEC sends two of its astronauts, Glenn and Fuji, to investigate the UFO.
Upon arriving on the planet, known as Planet X, the astronauts are greeted by two inhabitants of the planet, the Xiliens. These strange humanoid beings have a request for Earth: they want humanity to temporarily house Godzilla and Rodan on their planet to fend off King Ghidorah, a three-headed monster that has been ravaging their planet. In exchange, the Xiliens offer humanity a cure for all disease and mining rights to their planet.
The proposal is initially declined by the Earth officials, but the possibility of a cure for all diseases persuades them to accept the deal. Godzilla and Rodan are brought to Planet X and do battle with King Ghidorah, while Glenn and Fuji learn some dark secrets about the Xiliens' true intentions for Earth.
The film boasts great special effects for its time, with impressive spaceship designs and monster suits that still hold up today. The underwater sequences in particular are visually stunning, showcasing the abilities of Honda and his team of filmmakers.
Invasion of Astro-Monster also addresses some thematic concerns, such as the dangers of atomic power and the potential consequences of not properly communicating with alien species. The film is ultimately a fun, action-packed adventure that will entertain all fans of the sci-fi genre.
The standout performances in the film are Nick Adams as American astronaut Glenn, and Akira Takarada as Japanese astronaut Fuji. The film's soundtrack is also noteworthy, composed by Akira Ifukube, who is known for his work on the Godzilla franchise.
Invasion of Astro-Monster is considered one of the best films in the Godzilla franchise, as well as one of the best sci-fi films of the 1960s. The film blends campy humor with impressive action and special effects, resulting in an entertaining and memorable experience that stands the test of time.
