Inner Senses is a psychological thriller film made in 2002, directed by Lo Chi-leung and starring Leslie Cheung, Karena Kar-Yan Lam, and Maggie Poon. The story revolves around a young woman called Yee (played by Karena Kar-Yan Lam) who has unexplained supernatural experiences. Yee starts seeing strange apparitions and having recurring nightmares, causing her to become mentally unstable. She seeks help from a psychiatrist named Jim (played by Leslie Cheung) and thus begins their struggle to understand and solve Yee's supernatural problems.

As the film progresses, we discover more about Yee's past, her traumatic past experiences as a child, and how they manifest in her present. Jim, who also has his own personal demons, uses his professional knowledge and understanding to try to help Yee, but he is soon pulled into her supernatural world. Jim starts having his own visions and becomes convinced the visions are connected to him.

The movie takes a horror-esque turn when Jim and Yee join forces to uncover the secrets behind what's happening to them. It's not exactly paranormal phenomena, but something more sinister hiding behind an apparently normal exterior. As the story develops, both Jim and Yee get pulled into a world of the paranormal controlled by sinister forces.

The film explores the characters' delicate psychological balance, Yee's inner turmoil, and the concept of blind faith in religion among other complicated emotions that arise when one encounters the unknown. It also touches upon the theme of coming to terms with traumatic past experiences and the mind's ability to create its own reality.

The acting in Inner Senses is excellent, particularly Leslie Cheung's character. He brings depth and nuance to his role as a psychiatrist, convincingly portraying both his initial skepticism and eventual belief in Yee's supernatural experiences. Karena Kar-Yan Lam also delivers an outstanding performance as Yee, offering a character that simmers with mental instability while questioning her reality. The supporting cast doesn't disappoint, as they add weight to the film with their strong performances.

The cinematography and production design are top-notch, with an impeccably well-crafted and directed supernatural world that is both imaginative and unnerving. The music and sound design complement the film's emotional range, amplifying its potent emotions and subtle tonalities where rightfully required.

Overall, Inner Senses is an intelligent and intriguing psychological thriller that manages to keep you on your seat for the entire ride. It's a film that toyos with your psychological emotions on several levels, and it isn't until the final act that everything comes together. It's a shame that Leslie Cheung, the lead actor playing Jim, passed away shortly after the release of the film making it his last film. But this film attests to his immense talent and exceptional acting skills. So, if you're looking for a well-acted, well-paced and engaging psychological horror film, then Inner Senses won't disappoint.
