In The Mouth of Madness is a film that is both a classic horror film and a tongue-in-cheek parody of American horror in general. Directed by John Carpenter, this film deals with the macabre and impossible events surrounding an insurance investigator and a missing horror author. The film opens up with insurance investigator Sam Trent being tasked with finding a vanished horror author by the name of Sutter Cane. Cane's novels have a huge fan base, and they resemble classic American horror by authors like Stephen King (whose name sounds similar to Cane's) or H.P. Lovecraft. Strange things are happening though; crazed fans, predictions of the end of the world, and murderous violence are causing the publisher significant concern. So Trent gets behind the wheel and goes to track Cane down with the help of a company editor.

What looks like a simple, New England town turns out to be anything but. Cane's magnum opus, driven by some dark force that has no name, is out to alter the very fabric of reality.

In the Mouth of Madness is a 1994 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.1 and a MetaScore of 53.
