I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer is a 2006 slasher horror film, directed by Sylvain White and written by Michael D. Weiss. The movie is a sequel to the 1997 hit movie, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which itself was based on a novel by Lois Duncan. The movie stars Brooke Nevin, David Paetkau, Torrey DeVitto, Ben Easter in lead roles, and follows a group of teenagers who accidentally cause the death of a friend and are threatened by a vengeful killer.
The movie is set in the small town of Buffkin, Colorado, where a group of four friends Gilly (Brooke Nevin), Nick (David Paetkau), Colby (Seth Packard), and Amber (Torrey DeVitto) are working as carnival employees just before the Fourth of July. The movie opens with them driving up to the carnival area in a beat-up pickup truck, joking around with one another. Gilly is the most accomplished of the group, receiving a scholarship to the University of Colorado in the fall. Nick is a cocky charmer who has his sights set on Gilly, while Colby and Amber are a couple.
After a prank goes wrong at the carnival, the group is forced to leave the area to avoid getting caught by the police. On their way back to town, they run down a mysterious figure on the road and believing him to be dead, dump his body in a lake. Exactly a year later, the group receives a letter stating "I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER!" They try to ignore the message, but soon strange things start happening to them. They begin to receive mysterious phone calls, and they all receive notes indicating that the person knows what they did. The group suspects that this is the dead man's family member and they worry about their safety.
To make matters worse, the group has a falling out and things seem to be turning from bad to worse. Colby believes that somehow Nick is responsible for the deaths, which he believes is a manifestation of the belief of a local legend. The legend states that the spirit of the man they supposedly killed, will seek revenge on the group for as long as they remain silent about the incident. The group is eventually forced to face its demons and come together to figure out the identity of the attacker before it is too late.
The film's director captures the suspenseful moments very well, and the four lead actors do a great job in their roles, particularly Brooke Nevin, who delivers a solid performance as the lead of the group. The movie features a few good jump scares with gore and suspense in parts, which will keep you hooked. The plot is good enough, and there are several twists and turns to keep the audience guessing till the end.
One of the standout scenes in the movie is where the group is driving in a van, and they come across a church that has eerie music being played in it. They decide to investigate the church, and they find things that only make things worse for them, building the tension up to a climactic end.
Overall, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer is an enjoyable movie that does not try to take itself too seriously. It is a good movie to watch if you are looking for a horror flick, with plot twists, storyline and mystery trope. The performances of the cast and the visuals, coupled with the good direction, make it an entertaining film that is worth watching.
