Set in a quaint English village just before the beginning of World War II, If Winter Comes tells the story of Mark Sabre, a kind-hearted man who lives a contented but uneventful life with his wife, Mabel Sabre. Mark, played by Walter Pidgeon, is a successful writer and a respected member of the community. His tranquility is suddenly interrupted when he meets Nona Tybar, played by Deborah Kerr, a young and beautiful woman who has just moved to the town with her mother. Nona is unlike any other woman Mark has ever met, and he finds himself drawn to her.
As Mark and Nona get to know each other better, they form a deep connection, despite the many differences between them. Nona is a free spirit who embraces life enthusiastically, while Mark is a reserved and somewhat melancholic man who has always played it safe. However, their budding romance is not meant to be, as Nona's mother, played by Angela Lansbury, disapproves of her daughter's association with Mark. She believes that Mark is not the right man for Nona and warns her to stay away from him.
Despite their mutual attraction, Mark and Nona decide to remain friends, and Mark tries to help Nona in any way he can. However, as the war looms closer and the villagers become increasingly anxious, Mark's life becomes more complicated. He is faced with unexpected challenges that force him to question his values and the very meaning of his existence. Through it all, Mark remains a decent, honest man who tries to do the right thing, even when it is difficult.
The movie is a poignant exploration of human relationships and the complexities of love. The characters are well-drawn and nuanced, and the acting is superb. Walter Pidgeon brings depth and sensitivity to the role of Mark Sabre, while Deborah Kerr is luminous as the captivating Nona. Angela Lansbury is excellent as the formidable Mrs. Tybar, whose motives are never entirely clear.
The film is also a snapshot of a particular moment in history, the years leading up to World War II. The movie captures the tension and uncertainty of that time, as well as the resilience of the human spirit. The winter of the film's title is both literal and metaphorical, as it represents the harshness of life and the need to find warmth and comfort in the face of adversity.
If Winter Comes is a classic film that has stood the test of time. It is a study of human frailty and courage, of love and loss, and of the essential human need for connection. The movie is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is still hope, and that love, in all its many forms, can help us to persevere.
If Winter Comes is a 1947 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3.
