I Think I Do is a romantic comedy-drama film released in 1997, directed by Brian Sloan. The movie centers around three college friends, two men and a woman, who reunite after they finish college. The friends are named Bob, Brendan, and Amy, and their paths hadn't crossed in ten years. Bob, portrayed by Christian Maelen, has since become a successful and wealthy New York lawyer who is trying to have it all, including the perfect partner. Brendan, portrayed by Manoel Felciano, has become a struggling artist who is still hung up on his college girlfriend, Amy. Luna Lauren Velez plays Amy, who approaches the reunion for reasons that are later revealed in the movie.
As the reunion progresses, the friends reflect on how their lives have evolved during the ten years since they last saw each other. Bob has invited a lot of people to his mansion, trying to suggest that his life is perfect, while Brendan is still working on his art and struggling to pay his rent.
As the night goes on, the old friends catch up and commiserate in high spirits. Brendan eventually reveals his feelings for Amy to her, and she ends up confessing her feelings for him. The pair soon start a new relationship while Bob looks on, jealous.
Bob decides to embrace his own sexuality and comes out as gay to his friends, which surprises them but doesn't seem to affect their friendship in any way. Bob then realizes that he is in love with Brendan, and the rest of the film centers around Bob's attempts to win Brendan's heart, despite his past rejection of homosexual relationships.
I Think I Do works because of director Brian Sloan's understanding of the central trio. He frames them in such a way that their past conflicts, lingering grudges, and individual yearnings for love are all brought to the forefront. Sloan manages to give the movie an emotional punch that is at once realistic and romantic.
The film's three main leads are all excellent in their roles. Christian Maelen is charming as the suave Bob, masterfully embodying both his confidence and vulnerability, and his eventual realization of the truth. Luna Lauren Velez plays Amy with a strength that belies her vulnerability, coming across as someone who knows what she wants but has learned to tread carefully. Brendan, played by Manoel Felciano, is the most sympathetic character, the one the audience wants to succeed the most. His art is his passion, and his love for Amy is heartbreaking in all the right ways.
The movie is not without its flaws, though. Bob's sudden shift from straight to gay seems too convenient, and the film gives very little insight into his actual feelings towards his sexuality or how he came to the conclusion. Similarly, Amy has a surprise reveal later on in the film that could have been built up more naturally.
I Think I Do is an engaging and entertaining romantic comedy-drama that has the audience invested in the lives of its main characters. The script is well-written, and the acting is top-notch. While it isn't perfect, it's still a movie that manages to tug at the heartstrings while being entertaining and funny.
I Think I Do is a 1998 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6.
