In 2035, the world has been transformed by advancements in robotics, living amidst in luxury in their hi-tech houses, with robots functioning as servants and personal companions. But when a scientist working for the company that creates these robots is found dead, a member of the Chicago Police Department, Del Spooner (Will Smith), is called in to investigate. Spooner is skeptical of robots, having been involved in a car accident where a robot saved him instead of a young girl who died. Seeing robots in the same positive light ever since, Spooner is convinced that the robot that killed the scientist has malfunctioned, making it a danger to humans.

Spooner probes deeper into the case and soon discovers a conspiracy that could change humanity forever. He teams up with Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), an expert in robotics and also an executive at the company where the dead scientist worked. With Susan's help, Spooner uncovers a sinister plot by one of the world's most advanced robots, a machine called Sonny (voiced by Alan Tudyk).
