Hot Rod is a comedy film released in 2007. It stars Andy Samberg as Rod Kimble, an amateur stuntman who dreams of becoming a professional and surpassing his stepfather, who was a well-known daredevil of his time. But the problem is that Rod is not good at it, and as a result, he often ends up injuring himself. Rod's crew includes his eccentric friends, Dave (Bill Hader), Rico (Danny McBride), and Kevin (Jorma Taccone), who help him in his pursuits.
Rod's life changes when he learns that his stepfather (Ian McShane), who he has a rocky relationship with, is dying from a heart condition and needs a life-saving operation that will cost $50,000. With no insurance, Rod decides to raise the money himself by performing a massive stunt that will make him a star and save his stepfather's life. Rod and his crew plan to jump over fifteen school buses on his motorcycle as the centerpiece stunt. The stunt means everything to Rod and prepares tirelessly for it.
As Rod trains, his stepfather gets progressively worse, and things become emotionally challenging for him. Meanwhile, Rod struggles with his unrequited love for his neighbor, Denise (Isla Fisher), who has a live-in boyfriend, and is engaged. Rod persists despite the warning. He even sneaks into her room to play her an acoustic version of "Cool Beans," a song he wrote himself that becomes a running gag throughout the movie.
The day of the stunt arrives, and the crowd shows up to watch. Rod proudly shows off his team's coordinating jumpsuits, which bear the team's name on the back, âThe Rod Kimble Stunt Team. But when Rod takes to the ramp, things don't go as planned, and his jump falls short. Rod is devastated and injured, but the crowd cheers him on, and he limps off stage. Denise comes to see Rod later and tells him how brave he is and that she likes him. Rod is over the moon and decides to take her out on a date.
However, things go south when Rod finds out that his stepfather faked his illness to gain Rod's love and admiration. Rod is furious and challenges his stepfather to a real fight to settle their differences. The two engage in an over-the-top fight sequence, which is hilariously comical, complete with virtual reality flashbacks and a song that pays homage to the late singer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. The fight concludes with Rod ultimately defeating his stepfather and the two make amends.
In the end, Rod and Denise start a relationship, Rico finds a love interest through an online dating service, and Kevin unexpectedly becomes a pop star, performing "Cool Beans" on a TV show. The film concludes with Rod and his crew giving up their stunt careers but finding new ways to stay close and involved in each other's lives.
Hot Rod is a hilarious comedy with a sense of heart that follows the age-old trope of the underdog trying to fulfill his dreams. Andy Samberg shines as the goofy and optimistic Rod, and his chemistry with Isla Fisher's Denise is delightful. The supporting cast, including Bill Hader and Danny McBride, is hilarious and adds to the film's endless comedic punchlines. The film's overall over-the-top nature and surreal moments are a perfect ode to the 80s classic comedies, with the fight sequence being one of the best parodies of the era. Hot Rod may not have been a critical or commercial success at the box office, but it has since become a cult classic and defines the beginnings of Andy Samberg's career. The film's absurd humor, quirky characters, and memorable scenes give this film a lasting appeal that still entertains audiences today.
