Hot Pursuit is a 1987 action-comedy movie set in the state of Texas, USA. The movie follows the story of Dan Bartlett (John Cusack), a young man who is determined to become a police officer. He is given the chance to prove himself when he is tasked with escorting a witness, a beautiful young woman named Maria (Wendy Gazelle), to trial in Dallas. Maria is the daughter of a notorious drug dealer named Felix Riptide (Robert Loggia), and had agreed to testify against him in exchange for immunity.
Dan's trip starts off smoothly, but it soon becomes clear that they are being pursued by Felix's hitmen, who are determined to silence Maria before she can testify. Dan and Maria's journey takes them on a wild chase through Texas, with Felix's men hot on their trail. The pair also find themselves pursued by the police, who mistake them for criminals.
Along the way, Dan and Maria encounter a number of interesting characters, including a pair of hapless criminals named Tony and Carlos (Jerry Stiller and Ben Stiller, respectively), who inadvertently help Dan and Maria out of a couple of tight spots. Another memorable character is Officer Bobo (Keith David), a no-nonsense cop who initially suspects Dan of being a criminal but ultimately decides to help him out.
As the chase goes on, Dan and Maria begin to develop feelings for each other, despite the danger they are facing. Dan starts to question his loyalty to the police force, and realizes that there may be more to the situation than meets the eye.
The action in Hot Pursuit is fast-paced and entertaining, with plenty of car chases, shootouts, and narrow escapes. The movie's humor is also a highlight, with the Stiller father-son duo providing some great comedic moments.
John Cusack is excellent as the likable but inexperienced Dan, while Wendy Gazelle brings a toughness and vulnerability to her role as Maria. Robert Loggia is suitably menacing as Felix, and his henchmen provide some formidable opponents for Dan and Maria.
Hot Pursuit was directed by Steven Lisberger, who is best known for creating the movie Tron. The movie was not a box office success, but has since gained a cult following thanks to its entertaining mix of action and comedy.
Overall, Hot Pursuit is an enjoyable movie that offers plenty of laughs and thrills. John Cusack's charm, the movie's fast-paced action, and the Stiller's comedic performances make it a fun watch for fans of 80s action movies.
