In the 1988 horror-comedy film Hobgoblins, a group of small, furry creatures with the ability to conjure up terrifying illusions wreaks havoc on a group of unsuspecting teenagers. The film begins with a security guard named McCreedy (played by Tom Bartlett) being tasked with watching over an abandoned film studio. Despite warnings from his superior, McCreedy inadvertently unleashes a group of mischievous hobgoblins from a locked vault in the building.
As the hobgoblins begin to run amok, a group of teenagers - including Kevin (Paige Sullivan), Daphne (Kelley Palmer), Nick (Steven Boggs), and Kyle (Billy Frank) - find themselves caught in the middle of the chaos. Each of the teens has a personal connection to the studio, whether they work there or just enjoy sneaking in to watch movies.
The hobgoblins use their illusionary powers to manipulate the teens' deepest fears and desires, causing them to act out in bizarre and dangerous ways. Nick, for example, is suddenly convinced that he is a rock star and sets out to perform for a crowd of adoring fans - with disastrous consequences.
As the teens struggle to escape the hobgoblins' grip, they begin to realize that the creatures can only be defeated by facing their own fears head-on. But even as they band together, it becomes clear that not everyone will make it out alive.
Hobgoblins is a classic example of 'so bad it's good' cinema, with its low-budget effects, cheesy dialogue, and over-the-top performances. Despite its flaws (or perhaps because of them), it has amassed a cult following over the years.
Critics at the time of its release were less than impressed, with many panning it as a cheap Gremlins knockoff. However, the film's campy charm and nostalgic appeal have helped it endure as a cult classic.
While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, Hobgoblins holds a special place in the hearts of horror-comedy fans, who appreciate it for its goofy sense of fun and off-kilter humor.
Hobgoblins is a 1987 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 2.2.
