Hillbillys in a Haunted House is a 1967 musical comedy film directed by Jean Yarbrough. The film starred country singer and actor Ferlin Husky, popular model and actress Joi Lansing, and country music comedian Don Bowman. The movie follows three country music singers, Woody Wetherby (Husky), Boots Malone (Bowman), and Jeepers (Merle Haggard), as they travel to Nashville to perform at a country music festival. When their car breaks down, they are forced to spend the night at a creepy old mansion owned by Dr. Paul von Rontgen (John Carradine), who is conducting mysterious and spooky experiments.
Dr. von Rontgen's experiments, which involve the use of a transmitter and microfilm, attract the attention of spies who will stop at nothing to get their hands on the technology. Meanwhile, the three singers, along with their female companion, Billie Jo (Lansing), find themselves trapped in the mansion, which is haunted by ghosts and other supernatural beings.
As they try to unravel the mystery of the mansion, they encounter various characters, including a sinister chauffeur (Basil Rathbone), a creepy caretaker (Lon Chaney Jr.), and a beautiful but deadly Russian spy (Nancy Sinatra). The film features a mix of comedy, horror, and music, with performances by Husky, Bowman, and Haggard, as well as appearances by other country music stars such as Sonny James, Merle Travis, and Molly Bee.
Despite its B-movie status and low budget, Hillbillys in a Haunted House has gained a cult following over the years, thanks in part to its campy charm and fun musical numbers. The film's cast of quirky characters and spooky setting make for an entertaining and lighthearted Halloween-themed movie, perfect for fans of horror-comedies and 1960s pop culture.
