Hide and Seek is a psychological thriller directed by John Polson and released in 2005. The movie was written by Ari Schlossberg and stars Robert De Niro, Dakota Fanning, Famke Janssen, and Elisabeth Shue. The movie revolves around David Callaway (Robert De Niro) and his daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) who move to a small town in upstate New York after the suicide of David's wife. Emily is shy and withdrawn, and the two struggle to cope with their loss as Emily exhibits strange behavior, including inventing an imaginary friend named Charlie.

As David tries to connect with Emily, strange things start to happen in their new house. Emily seems to be communicating with Charlie through drawings and the game of hide and seek. David soon begins to suspect that there is something more to Emily's imaginary friend, and the townspeople begin to tell stories of a man named Charlie, who was rumored to have a connection to David's house.

As David's paranoia grows, he becomes increasingly convinced that Emily is in danger and that Charlie is real. His obsession with Charlie leads him down a dangerous path as he tries to unravel the truth behind him and protect his daughter from harm. Along the way, he crosses paths with a therapist, Katherine (Famke Janssen), and a neighbor, Elizabeth (Elisabeth Shue), who become embroiled in his struggle to uncover the mysterious identity of Charlie.

The movie is a tense and atmospheric thriller that keeps the audience guessing until the very end. The performances by De Niro and Fanning are both excellent, with Fanning delivering a standout performance as the troubled and mysterious Emily. The movie effectively builds a sense of dread and paranoia as David's grip on reality begins to slip, and the audience is left wondering if Charlie is a figment of his imagination or an actual threat to his family.

The movie's strength lies in its execution of the classic horror trope of the haunted house and the use of the child as a conduit for supernatural forces. The movie is also notable for its themes of grief and loss and the ways in which David, Emily, and the other characters cope with or refuse to confront their past traumas.

Overall, Hide and Seek is a well-crafted thriller with solid performances and effective suspense. The movie skillfully balances psychological horror with supernatural elements, resulting in a satisfyingly eerie and atmospheric movie that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
