Her First Romance is a 1940 romantic comedy directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Edith Fellows, Wilbur Evans, and Julie Bishop. The film follows the teenage girl Patricia 'Patsy' Cardell (Edith Fellows) who is returning from boarding school for the summer. She is excited to be back home but finds that things have changed since she left. Her mother has fallen in love with a man named Tony Travers (Grady Sutton) and her best friend, Mary (Julie Bishop), is now dating Patsy's childhood crush, Bill Calhoun (Wilbur Evans).
Patsy wants a romance of her own and sets her sights on Bill, much to Mary's chagrin. Patsy begins to spend time with Bill and the two become close, but Patsy's mother catches wind of their budding relationship and forbids her from seeing him. In an effort to keep them apart, Patsy's mother sends her to a fancy boarding school in Europe.
While in Europe, Patsy tries to forget about Bill and enjoy her surroundings. She meets a young man named Pierre (Jacques Charley) and the two strike up a friendship. However, Patsy can't shake her feelings for Bill and sends him a letter professing her love.
When Patsy returns home, she discovers that Bill never received her letter and has moved on with Mary. Patsy is heartbroken but Tony Travers steps in to console her. Patsy realizes that Tony has always been there for her and the two fall in love.
The movie is a sweet and charming coming of age story with a heavy emphasis on young love. The film captures the excitement of young love and the angst that comes with it. The chemistry between Edith Fellows and Wilbur Evans is palpable and their scenes together are some of the movie's strongest.
The film also succeeds in portraying the complicated relationships between teenagers and their parents. Patsy's mother is overprotective and controlling, and this causes a rift between the two. The movie realistically depicts the struggle that teenagers face when trying to find their own identity while also navigating parental expectations.
Another standout character is Tony Travers, played by Grady Sutton. Tony is a quirky character who provides comic relief throughout the film. He is a bit odd but his heart is in the right place, and he truly cares for Patsy.
Her First Romance is a fun and heartwarming movie that will appeal to anyone who loves a good romantic comedy. The film captures the excitement and drama of young love and shows that no matter how complicated things may seem, love will always find a way.
