Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II is a 1987 horror film directed by Bruce Pittman. It is the sequel to the 1980 slasher movie Prom Night, but it features a completely different story and characters. The plot of the movie follows a young high school student, Vicki Carpenter (Wendy Lyon), and her struggle with a vengeful ghost named Mary Lou Maloney (Lisa Schrage).
The movie opens with a prologue set in 1957, where Mary Lou is a popular high school student who is running for prom queen. However, she is caught cheating on her exams and is disqualified from the competition. In a fit of rage, she sets fire to the school and dies in the flames. The movie then cuts to 1987, where Vicki is a shy and introverted student at the same high school. She has a crush on a fellow student named Craig (Justin Louis) and hopes he will ask her to prom.
Things take a scary turn when Vicki accidentally opens a trunk in the school's storage room and releases Mary Lou's ghost. Mary Lou quickly takes control of Vicki's body and starts wreaking havoc on the school. She has her eyes on Craig and does everything in her power to seduce him and make him her prom king. Meanwhile, strange occurrences start happening around the school, and Vicki's friends begin to suspect that something is wrong.
The movie features a number of suspenseful and terrifying scenes, as Mary Lou uses her powers to manipulate and control everyone around her. She possesses Vicki's body and uses her as a vessel to carry out her revenge against those who wronged her in the past. Along the way, she also gains new powers, such as the ability to move objects with her mind and the ability to control fire.
Michael Ironside plays the role of the school's principal, Bill Nordham, who has a dark secret involving Mary Lou from his past. He becomes a key player in the movie's plot as Vicki and her friends try to unravel the mystery of Mary Lou's ghost and stop her before it's too late. Ironside is particularly effective in his role, bringing a sense of gravitas and depth to his character that elevates the movie beyond simple horror fare.
The movie's special effects are another highlight, particularly in the scenes involving Mary Lou's ghostly powers. The use of practical effects and miniatures create some truly memorable moments, such as when Mary Lou sets fire to a car in the school parking lot or when she causes a giant disco ball to crash down onto the dance floor during prom.
Overall, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II is an entertaining horror movie with plenty of scares and suspense. It manages to stand on its own despite being a sequel to a completely different movie, and the performances from the cast help to elevate the material beyond what could have been a simple slasher film. If you're a fan of '80s horror or supernatural thrillers, this movie is definitely worth checking out.
