Heart of Midnight is a psychological thriller film that came out in 1988. Written and directed by Matthew Chapman, it tells the story of Carol Rivers (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a young and vulnerable woman who inherits a crumbling and eerie nightclub located in the heart of New York City. The plot of the movie revolves around Carol's experiences as she tries to come to terms with her inheritance and remodeling the nightclub. However, whenever she is alone inside the building, strange and unsettling things begin to happen, things that she cannot explain, and they force her into a world of madness and terror. As she tries to understand what is happening, she begins to unravel secrets about the nightclub's past and ultimately faces down mysterious and dangerous characters.
The movie begins with Carol arriving alone in New York City to see her sister, who is hospitalized. During her stay in the city, Carol learns that her Aunt Florence, who she was not aware of, has passed away, and surprisingly, has left her a nightclub called The Midnight. While Carol is not keen to take up the responsibility, her boyfriend, played by Peter Coyote, convinces her to own the nightclub and renovate it as an opportunity to start a new life.
Despite her initial reluctance, Carol does decorate the club, and things seem to be going fine; however, it's not long before she realizes that something is not right about The Midnight. Soon she starts experiencing strange happenings which make her feel uncomfortable and scared.
As Carol starts investigating the nightclub's past, she encounters a series of bizarre characters who seem to be hiding dark secrets. Among these characters are her aunt's old friends who have their own twisted agendas, such as Lydia (Brenda Vaccaro), a creepy and menacing fortune teller who hangs around the club, and George (Jack Hallet), an old man who is usually drunk and tries to influence Carol's decisions.
As Carol indulges more deeply into the nightclub's history, she starts experiencing sudden and vivid flashbacks of the past owners, Claire and Lizzie, who died under mysterious circumstances. The memories that Carol has of the past owners are vivid and disturbing, and they seem to be taking over her mind, making her question her sanity.
Throughout the movie, the audience is kept on the edge of their seats as they watch Carol battle her sanity while trying to unravel the history of The Midnight. She tries to ignore the horrors that she sees and feels, but the more she tries to push it aside, the more her mental health deteriorates.
The movie does an excellent job of building suspense and creating an eerie atmosphere. The lighting, the sounds, and the setting of the nightclub add a lot to the movie's mysterious, atmospheric feel. The actors also do a great job of bringing their characters to life, with Jennifer Jason Leigh giving an especially powerful performance as Carol.
Overall, Heart of Midnight is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that keeps the audience captivated until the very end. With its great storytelling, acting, and eerie atmosphere, it is definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the genre.
