Harry and Walter Go to New York is a comedy crime film from 1976 directed by Mark Rydell. The movie stars James Caan, Elliott Gould, Michael Caine, Diane Keaton, and Charles Durning. The story takes place in the late 19th century and is about two bank robbers, Harry Dighby (Caan) and Walter Hill (Gould), who are constantly struggling to make ends meet. After they get caught stealing, they are sent to prison where they meet incarcerated journalist Adam Worth (Caine), a well-known and successful criminal mastermind. Worth shares his knowledge and expertise with the two men and educates them on how to rob a bank properly.

Upon their release, Harry and Walter embark on a robbery spree that takes them to New York City. In the Big Apple, they meet a beautiful feminist newspaper editor named Lissa Chestnut (Keaton) who becomes the love interest of both men. With the help of Lissa, they target a corrupt and wealthy banker who has been embezzling funds from his own bank with the intention of using the money to buy a horse that he hopes will win the Kentucky Derby.

Harry and Walter, with Lissa's help, hatch a plan to steal the money and get away with it. Meanwhile, they must also outwit the competition -- Adam Worth, who has also made his way to New York to conduct some heists of his own. The four criminals all find themselves competing for the same loot, in a high stakes game of cat and mouse.

Throughout the film, the audience is treated to a number of comedic and thrilling moments. The chemistry between the three leads is evident and the witty banter between Caan, Gould, and Caine is especially captivating. The movie is also filled with delightful period details, such as the ins and outs of old-timey bank heists, bustling streets of New York City, and scenic locales like the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.

Harry and Walter Go to New York is a fun and lighthearted comedic film that showcases the talents of its stars as well as the expert direction of Rydell. It may not be a deep or intellectually stimulating movie, but it's enjoyable entertainment and a perfect escape for those looking to unwind and have a few laughs.
