"Greedy" is a 1994 American comedy film directed by Jonathan Lynn and starring Michael J. Fox, Kirk Douglas, and Nancy Travis. The film revolves around the McTeague family, a greedy and dysfunctional clan led by the patriarch, the wealthy and eccentric Uncle Joe McTeague (Kirk Douglas). At the beginning of the film, we meet Uncle Joe's three nephews, Danny (Michael J. Fox), an aspiring actor who is struggling to make ends meet; Glen (Phil Hartman), a successful but unhappy businessman; and Frank (Ed Begley Jr.), a mild-mannered dentist with a boring life. They all have their reasons for wanting Uncle Joe's fortune, and when he announces that he has a terminal illness, they all start jockeying for position to become his heir.
The three nephews' wives, Robin (Nancy Travis), Patti (Olivia D'Abo), and Molly (Jere Burns), also get involved in the family squabble, with each of them trying to convince their husband to do whatever it takes to get Uncle Joe's money. Meanwhile, a young woman named Cynthia (Colleen Camp) claims to be Uncle Joe's long-lost daughter, further complicating the inheritance issue.
As the film progresses, the McTeague family becomes increasingly ruthless and backstabbing, with each member using every trick in the book to get their hands on Uncle Joe's fortune. Danny is the only one who seems to have a conscience, and he struggles with the moral implications of trying to take advantage of his dying uncle.
The film is a satire of greed and materialism in American society, with the McTeague family representing the worst aspects of the "me first" culture. The performances are all top-notch, with Kirk Douglas stealing the show as the cantankerous Uncle Joe. Michael J. Fox is also excellent as the conflicted Danny, and Nancy Travis adds a touch of humanity as the only character who seems to genuinely care about others.
There are plenty of laughs in "Greedy," but there is also a message about the danger of putting money and material possessions above all else. It's a movie that will make you think, as well as entertain you.
Overall, "Greedy" is an underrated gem from the 90s that deserves more attention. It's a witty and sharp comedy that skewers the excesses of American culture while still managing to be funny and entertaining. If you're in the mood for a comedy that will make you laugh and make you think, then "Greedy" is definitely worth watching.
