Godsend is a 2004 sci-fi thriller movie that tells the story of a couple's desperation to bring their deceased son back to life. The film is directed by Nick Hamm and features a star-studded cast that includes Robert De Niro, Greg Kinnear, and Rebecca Romijn. The movie starts with Paul (Greg Kinnear) and Jessie (Rebecca Romijn) Duncan, who are happily married and have an eight-year-old son named Adam. When Adam dies tragically in a car accident, their world is shattered. Paul, who is a biology teacher, learns about a well-known geneticist named Richard Wells (Robert De Niro), who claims to have the ability to clone human beings. Despite Jessie's initial reluctance, they contact Dr. Wells and offer him a substantial amount of money to clone Adam.

Dr. Wells ultimately agrees to their request, and a year later, the couple is introduced to their new son, whom they name Adam II. At first, the family is excited and relieved that they have the chance to raise a second Adam. However, strange things begin to happen around Adam II as he grows older. The boy has nightmares and experiences eerie visions, which eventually drive his parents to dig deeper into Dr. Wells' background.

The couple soon discovers that Dr. Wells has been hiding some dark secrets, and that their son may not be who he seems. As Paul and Jessie try to unravel the mystery surrounding Adam II, they find themselves in the middle of a dark and dangerous situation. The movie then takes a darker tone as we find ourselves engulfed in the family’s misery.

Robert De Niro's performance as the arrogant and enigmatic Dr. Wells is remarkable; he dominates every scene he’s in. Rebecca Romijn also puts up a great act as the grieving mother Jessie, who is desperate to bring back her son. But perhaps the most powerful moment in Godsend belongs to Greg Kinnear, who embodies the pain and sorrow of a father mourning the loss of his child. He portrays well the exhausted man, who is willing to do anything to bring his son back, even though he knows it isn’t really his son.

The movie is well-made visually, with cinematography that is mysterious and haunting, complementing the film's eerie tone. The music score is also a standout, with haunting and orchestral arrangements that add to the tension and suspense of every scene.

The movie delves into many themes, such as the moral and ethical implications of human cloning, and the lengths a parent will go to spare a child from dying. It addresses personal tragedy and the sorrow that never goes away, even when it seems like a chance of hope appears. The narrative of the movie combines these themes to make the movie well-rounded with different perspectives.

Overall, Godsend is a thought-provoking film that asks its viewers to debate the morality of human cloning and how far a person will go to restore a lost child. It is a fast-paced and riveting sci-fi thriller that keeps the audience guessing until the very end. By balancing the emotional torment of grief with the dark themes of genetics and cloning, Nick Hamm showcases a masterful vision full of unexpected twists.

Godsend is a 2004 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.8 and a MetaScore of 24.
