Girls Just Want to Have Fun is a 1985 comedy film about the adventures of two teenage girls who dream of becoming professional dancers. The film stars Biff Yeager as Col. Glenn, Kristi Somers as Maggie, and Richard Blade as Malcom. Maggie is the daughter of a retired Army colonel, who has recently moved to a new town with her family. Maggie is excited to start at her new school but quickly discovers that it is an all-girls Catholic school, which disappoints her because she had hoped she could attend the same school as her favorite television dance show, Dance TV. Despite this, Maggie still dreams of becoming a professional dancer and wants to audition for Dance TV.
While at school, Maggie meets a girl named Lynne, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, who shares her passion for dancing. The two become fast friends, and Lynne introduces Maggie to her dance partner, Jeff, played by Lee Montgomery. Jeff is handsome, charming, and immediately catches Maggie's eye. However, Maggie soon discovers that Jeff is also the son of her father's nemesis, who happens to live next door.
Despite the rivalry between their families, Maggie and Jeff start working on a dance routine together in secret. They hope to enter Dance TV's national dance competition, which promises to make their dreams come true. While they practice, Maggie and Jeff's relationship develops, and they become romantically involved. However, their families' feud threatens to destroy their dreams and their relationship.
Meanwhile, Col. Glenn is worried about Maggie's influence on his younger daughter, whom he thinks is starting to behave recklessly. He is also concerned about his neighbors' loud music and partying. His suspicions are aroused when he discovers that his neighbor, Malcom, is the host of Dance TV, the very show that Maggie is obsessed with. Glenn forbids Maggie from having anything to do with Malcom, whom he feels is a bad influence.
As the dance competition approaches, Maggie and her friends work hard on perfecting their routine. But Jeff's father, who hates Col. Glenn, discovers that his son is planning to dance with Maggie and forbids him from doing so. However, Jeff defies his father and convinces his dance partner to perform on the show with him.
On the day of the competition, Maggie and Jeff face some stiff competition, but they manage to pull off a fantastic performance that delights the audience. However, Col. Glenn, who had reluctantly agreed to let Maggie participate in the contest, still harbors reservations about dancing and forbids his daughter from pursuing it further.
In the end, Maggie defies her father's orders and takes part in the school's dance performance, which becomes a huge success. She also sees Jeff again and reconciles with him, despite their families' feud. The film ends with Maggie and her friends being offered an opportunity to study dance professionally.
