Ghoulies II is a 1987 horror-comedy film directed by Albert Band and is the sequel to the 1985 film Ghoulies. The movie features an all-new cast of actors, with the exception of Royal Dano who returns to reprise his role as Malcolm Graves. The film takes place in a traveling carnival that has just arrived in a small town. The carnival is struggling to attract customers, and the owner, Uncle Ned (J. Downing), decides to use some cursed artifacts to liven up the attractions. One of the artifacts happens to be a crate full of demonic creatures known as Ghoulies.
When the Ghoulies are released from their crate, they start wreaking havoc around the carnival. The creatures are small, mischievous, and have a variety of supernatural abilities. They can teleport, possess objects, and even hypnotize humans. The Ghoulies quickly become popular with the carnival patrons, who assume that they are just part of the act. Meanwhile, the carnival workers, led by Larry (Damon Martin), are struggling to contain the creatures and prevent them from causing further trouble.
As the night progresses, the Ghoulies become more aggressive and start attacking the carnival patrons. Larry and his friends are forced to fight back to protect themselves and their customers. They are aided by an exorcist named Wolfgang (Phil Fondacaro), who has experience dealing with supernatural entities.
The film is a combination of horror and comedy, with a heavy emphasis on the latter. There are several comedic scenes throughout the movie, including a sequence where the Ghoulies manage to take over a rock band's equipment and put on a show.
The special effects in Ghoulies II are impressive for the time, with the Ghoulies themselves being brought to life through puppets and stop-motion animation. The movie also features a memorable soundtrack, with several catchy songs performed by the band White Sister.
One of the strengths of the film is its cast of characters. Damon Martin gives a likable performance as Larry, the hero of the story. Royal Dano is entertaining as Malcolm Graves, an eccentric carnival worker who has a history with the Ghoulies. Phil Fondacaro is hilarious as Wolfgang, the over-the-top exorcist who is not afraid to use unconventional methods to defeat the demons.
Overall, Ghoulies II is a fun and entertaining movie that is worth checking out for fans of horror-comedy. The film does not take itself too seriously and has a campy charm that makes it enjoyable to watch. While it may not be a classic of the genre, it is a solid entry that should please fans of the Ghoulies franchise.
