Ghilli is a 2004 Tamil action film directed by Dharani and produced by A. M. Rathnam. The movie stars Joseph Vijay, Trisha Krishnan, and Prakash Raj in prominent roles. The movie was a runaway hit and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil movies of all time. The movie revolves around the story of Velu (played by Joseph Vijay), a refugee from Sri Lanka who sneaks into India illegally. He ends up working as a caretaker for a cricket stadium in Chennai. He falls in love with the daughter of his employer, Dhanalakshmi (played by Trisha), but their romance is not well received by her father. Eventually, Velu and Dhanalakshmi's romantic relationship becomes the backdrop of the story as Velu gets caught up in a chaotic situation involving a local gangster, Muthupandi (played by Prakash Raj).
Muthupandi, who also happens to be a big fan of cricket, is organizing a tournament that is being sponsored by a gambling syndicate. When one of the players of the team, whom Muthupandi has bet a lot of money on, gets injured, he decides to kidnap the replacement player, who also happens to be Velu's friend. Velu, in an attempt to save his friend, gets embroiled in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with Muthupandi and his henchmen.
The movie reaches its climax during the final match of the tournament when Velu, who is now playing for the opposing team, comes face to face with Muthupandi. This confrontation leads to an intense action sequence, which forms the highlight of the movie.
The action sequences are choreographed by stunt director Anal Arasu and are among the most iconic moments of the movie. The movie is also known for its catchy soundtrack composed by Vidyasagar, which includes hit songs like "Appadi Podu" and "Kokku Para Para". The songs and the background score add to the adrenaline-fueled action sequences and help to keep the momentum of the movie going.
One of the strengths of the movie is the charismatic performance of Joseph Vijay. He brings a lot of energy and charisma to the character of Velu, making him a relatable and likable protagonist. Trisha Krishnan, who is widely regarded as one of the most talented actresses in Tamil cinema, also delivers a solid performance as Dhanalakshmi.
Prakash Raj, who is one of the most versatile actors in Indian cinema, brings his trademark intensity to the role of Muthupandi. He is one of the most memorable villains in the history of Tamil cinema and adds a lot of depth to the character of Muthupandi. The supporting cast also delivers strong performances, making the movie a well-rounded package.
In conclusion, Ghilli is a top-class mass entertainer that delivers on all fronts. It has a compelling storyline, excellent performances, and some of the best action sequences in Tamil cinema. If you are looking for an adrenaline-fueled ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then Ghilli is the perfect movie for you.
