Calvin is a young man in a dead-end job who spends much of his time at work dreaming about Brittany, a single, blonde co-worker who is always breaking up with her boyfriends. Calvin and Diane live in the same apartment building and have been friends since they were children. Calvin tells Diane he wants to learn to play Guitar Master to impress Brittany, since her last boyfriend was a guitar player. When Brittany was turned on to guys who drove motorcycles, Calvin got one, crashed and broke his leg. Before that Brittany liked guys that had pierced tongues. Calvin did that also and got an infected tongue.
Calvin laments to Diane about his upcoming 25th birthday. He says he is a loser since he doesn't have a girlfriend and has not accomplished a thing in his life. He believes that learning how to play guitar will be the way to Brittany's heart.
Diane says Brittany is shallow and superficial, and she cannot understand why Calvin wants to try and impress her again. The next day, Diane surprises Calvin with an early birthday present - Guitar Master II. He can't believe she did this for him, and practices all weekend.
On Monday, Calvin's boss informs him that the Green Project must be finished on Friday or he will lose his job. Each night Calvin stays late to work on the project. Each night the janitor comes by with his cart and stops for a short chat. Calvin tells the janitor he is practicing guitar on Guitar Master to impress a girl. The janitor tells Calvin a story about his own life when he was young and in a rock band. He tells Calvin to write words to the song if he really wants to impress a girl. Before he walks on, he says, never lose someone important to impress someone who isn't. It almost happened to him years ago and if it had, his life would have been meaningless.
Calvin's 25th birthday is only days away. Diane is helping Calvin plan the party and she is also helping him with words to the song. She will do anything for him. What will Calvin do for Diane?
