Gammera the Invincible is a 1966 science fiction monster movie directed by Noriaki Yuasa. The movie stars Albert Dekker, Brian Donlevy, and Diane J. Findlay. The movie is based on the original Japanese movie Gamera, featuring a giant prehistoric turtle named Gamera. The movie begins with a group of Soviet scientists discovering a giant prehistoric turtle frozen in the Arctic ice. They decide to bring the creature back to life using nuclear energy. However, the experiment goes wrong, and the turtle, now named Gamera, escapes and begins wreaking havoc across the world.
Meanwhile, a group of American scientists, led by Dr. Hidaka (Eiji Funakoshi), is investigating a series of mysterious disappearances of ships and planes in the Pacific Ocean. They eventually discover that Gamera is responsible for the attacks and attempt to find a way to stop him.
The U.S. military attempts to destroy Gamera with a massive barrage of weapons, but they prove to be ineffective against the creature's shell. Dr. Hidaka and his team realize that Gamera has a weakness in his underbelly and devise a plan to lure him into a volcano, where they can trap him using a wall of flames. The plan works, and Gamera is successfully trapped in the volcano.
However, the Soviet scientists soon arrive, looking to claim Gamera for their own purposes. The Americans and Soviets engage in a tense standoff, with both sides preparing to use nuclear weapons to destroy Gamera. In the end, Dr. Hidaka convinces the Soviets to join forces with them to study Gamera and find a way to control him.
Gammera the Invincible is a classic monster movie from the 1960s, featuring cheesy special effects and a simple plot. The movie is filled with action and suspense, as Gamera rampages across the world and the scientists struggle to stop him. The movie's message about the dangers of nuclear weapons is clear, and the movie's ending is surprisingly hopeful despite the destruction caused by Gamera throughout the movie.
The acting in the movie is mostly solid, with Albert Dekker as the standout as the ruthless Soviet scientist who is more interested in the potential military applications of Gamera than in studying him for scientific purposes. Brian Donlevy is also good as the gruff military leader who ultimately decides to work with Dr. Hidaka to stop Gamera.
The special effects in the movie are a mixed bag. The scenes of Gamera rampaging through cities are well done, with the giant turtle destroying buildings and breathing fire. However, the movie's low budget is evident in some of the scenes, such as the scenes of Gamera flying, which are clearly done using models on wires.
Overall, Gammera the Invincible is a fun and entertaining monster movie that is worth watching for fans of the genre. While the movie may not have the polished special effects or complex plot of more modern monster movies, it is a classic example of the genre and a nostalgic trip back to the 1960s.
Gammera the Invincible is a 1965 horror movie. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.0.
