Future '38 is a post-modern tribute to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s, albeit with a delightfully futuristic twist. Betty Gilpin stars as Banky, a detective from the year 2018 who is sent back in time to 1938 to stop a plot that could destroy the future as we know it. Along the way, she encounters a cast of zany characters who are all played with great gusto by the cast.

The plot is convoluted, but in the most entertaining way possible. Banky is after a "death ray" that could wipe out the world, and has to navigate her way through a series of obstacles in order to stop it from falling into the wrong hands. But really, the plot is just an excuse to let the characters loose and have some fun, and that's where the movie really shines.

Gilpin is a revelation as Banky, bringing a modern sensibility to the classic screwball comedy heroine. She's smart, feisty, and more than capable of handling herself in a world where women are supposed to be seen and not heard. Nick Westrate is equally impressive as the bumbling scientist, Bristol, who Banky enlists to help her on her mission. He has a gift for physical comedy that is reminiscent of the greats like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

Ethan Phillips, best known for his role as Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager, is a standout as the villainous Von Zipper. He chews the scenery with relish, playing the role with a cartoonish intensity that is both hilarious and menacing. He's the perfect foil for Banky, and their scenes together crackle with energy.

The movie is visually stunning, with a retro-futuristic aesthetic that is both charming and surreal. The costumes, sets, and cinematography are all top-notch, and the attention to detail is impressive. The movie was shot entirely in black and white, which gives it an added layer of authenticity.

The script is full of witty one-liners and sharp dialogue, and the actors deliver them with impeccable timing. The humor is broad and slapstick at times, but it never feels gratuitous or cheap. The movie has a heart, and there are moments of genuine emotion that are earned and not forced.

Overall, Future '38 is a delightful romp that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. It's a loving tribute to a bygone era of cinema, but with a fresh and modern twist that makes it feel relevant and vital. It's a movie that will appeal to fans of classic screwball comedies, as well as those who are just looking for a good time. Highly recommended.

Future '38 is a 2017 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 16 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7.
