From Beyond is a 1986 horror movie directed by Stuart Gordon, starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, and Ted Sorel. The movie is based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, and follows a group of scientists who create a machine that allows them to perceive a dimension beyond our own. The movie begins with Dr. Edward Pretorius (Sorel) and his assistant Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (Combs) working on the Resonator, a machine designed to stimulate the pineal gland and allow humans to perceive beyond their five senses. After successfully activating the machine, the scientists are attacked by a strange creature from another dimension.
Tillinghast is subsequently arrested and institutionalized after being accused of murdering Pretorius. He is visited by a psychiatrist, Dr. Katherine McMichaels (Crampton), who is interested in the Resonator and believes that Tillinghast may not be insane after all.
Together, Tillinghast and McMichaels return to Pretorius' laboratory to reactivate the Resonator and investigate the events that led to Pretorius' death. However, they soon realize that the machine has opened a gateway to a dimension filled with monstrous creatures that are now able to cross over into our world.
As Tillinghast and McMichaels struggle to survive and figure out a way to shut down the Resonator, they come face to face with their own inner demons and the terrifying possibilities of what lies beyond the limits of human perception.
From Beyond is a visually stunning and gruesome horror movie that delivers on both scares and gore. The practical effects used to bring the creatures to life are impressive and unsettling, and the movie's twisted sense of humor prevents it from ever taking itself too seriously.
One of the most memorable aspects of the movie is the performance by Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Tillinghast. Combs' manic energy and physicality in the role perfectly capture the character's descent into madness and obsession with the Resonator. Barbara Crampton is also excellent as Dr. McMichaels, bringing a sense of intelligence and strength to a character that could have easily been relegated to the role of a damsel in distress.
The movie's themes of perception and the unknown are handled with a surprising level of depth, as the characters are forced to confront the horrors of a dimension beyond their normal understanding. The Resonator becomes a metaphor for the dangers of pushing beyond the limits of what we can comprehend, and the consequences of playing with forces beyond our control.
Despite its low budget, From Beyond manages to create a world that feels both vivid and terrifying, with a sense of atmosphere and tension that remains palpable throughout. The movie's unique blend of horror, science fiction, and humor make it a standout from the era of 80s horror movies, and its cult status is well-deserved.
Overall, From Beyond is a creepy and entertaining horror movie, with impressive practical effects, strong performances, and a twisted sense of humor that make it a must-watch for fans of the genre.
