In the year 2241, a team of scientific researchers is sent to investigate a distant planet named Xarbia, known for its uncharted terrain and deadly creatures. Among the team is the brilliant but unconventional scientist Dr. Barbara Glaser (June Chadwick), who has been working on a revolutionary bio-computer named SAM, designed to aid in the research of new life forms.
Upon arriving on the planet, the team discovers that the previous group of researchers had been wiped out by an unknown force. As they begin to explore the planet, they encounter a deadly creature that has been genetically engineered by the previous team. With the help of the gruff and tough-guy security officer Mike Colby (Jesse Vint) and the sexy and quirky bio-engineer Tracy Baxter (Dawn Dunlap), the team tries to prevent the creature from escaping the laboratory and wreaking havoc on the rest of the planet.
Forbidden World is a classic sci-fi horror movie that draws inspiration from the Alien franchise while adding its own unique elements. The film's use of practical effects, such as the creature design, make-up and sets, give the film an added sense of realism that is often lacking in modern sci-fi movies.
Jesse Vint's portrayal of Mike Colby is one of the standout performances in the film. He is the quintessential tough-guy who is not afraid to get his hands dirty, but there is also a vulnerability to his character that makes him relatable. June Chadwick's Dr. Glaser is the brains behind the operation, but also has a no-nonsense attitude that makes her a force to be reckoned with. Dawn Dunlap's performance as Tracy Baxter adds a bit of levity to the otherwise tense movie, with her nonsensical dialogue and quirky demeanor.
The film's score, composed by Susan Justin, adds to the overall tension and unease, using a mix of electronic and orchestral elements. The lighting and cinematography are also notable, creating a dark and oppressive atmosphere that adds to the film's horror elements.
Forbidden World's plot is fairly simple, but it is executed well. The film is able to create a sense of danger and tension throughout, and it does not shy away from the more gruesome elements of the story. The film's use of practical effects and creature design is reminiscent of classic horror movies, bringing a sense of nostalgia to fans of the genre.
Overall, Forbidden World is a fun and suspenseful sci-fi horror movie that is sure to please fans of the genre. Its blend of practical effects and creature design, along with its tense atmosphere and memorable performances, make it a classic of its kind.
Forbidden World is a 1982 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 17 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.1 and a MetaScore of 41.
