The movie is a sequel to the 1985 hit film, Fletch. The story of Fletch Lives takes place in Louisiana, where Fletch inherits a sugarcane plantation from his aunt. Fletch decides to investigate the murder and soon finds himself tangled in a web of corruption and greed.
Fletch starts his investigation by talking to various colorful characters who live in the area. He meets Amanda Ray Ross (Julianne Phillips), a beautiful lawyer, who helps him out in his investigation. He also meets Ham Johnson (Cleavon Little), a local preacher who has a gambling problem, and Jimmy Lee Farnsworth (Randall 'Tex' Cobb), a wealthy developer who is trying to buy out all the small businesses in the area.
Fletch's investigation leads him to the wealthy and influential businessman, Calaghan (Hal Holbrook), who is running for governor. Fletch discovers that Calaghan is involved in a shady land scheme where he is trying to exploit the landowners to make money. Fletch also finds evidence that Calaghan is involved in some illegal activities, including bribery and murder.
As Fletch uncovers more information, he puts himself in danger, and his life is threatened by the people involved in the land scheme. Fletch uses his wit and humor to outsmart them and eventually uncovers the truth.
