Fire with Fire is a 1986 crime-drama directed by Duncan Gibbins, starring Craig Sheffer, Virginia Madsen, and Jon Polito. The film follows the story of a young man named Joe Fisk (Craig Sheffer) who witnesses a brutal murder while working as a firefighter. Joe is forced to go into witness protection to keep him safe from the gang who carried out the murder. However, when Joe falls in love with Lisa (Virginia Madsen), the daughter of his new identity's foster parents, he decides to take matters into his own hands and seek revenge.
As the movie begins, Joe is a firefighter who has just started his shift. One night, while they are out on a call, Joe witnesses a cold-blooded murder. The perpetrator of the crime is a street gang leader named Tony (played by Giancarlo Esposito). Joe is the only witness to the crime, making him a target for the gang. To protect himself and his family, Joe is forced to enter the witness protection program.
The FBI sets up Joe and his parents in a new town, under new identities, to keep them safe. It is here that Joe meets Lisa, a beautiful and kind-hearted woman who lives with her foster parents. Joe is initially hesitant to start a relationship with Lisa due to his situation, but he eventually gives in to his feelings.
Despite trying to move on from his past, Joe realizes that his desire for revenge on Tony won't go away. He decides to take matters into his own hands and track down Tony himself. Joe's actions put both him and Lisa in great danger, and they must navigate their way through the escalating violence wrought by the gang.
As the tension builds, the film takes the audience on a journey of love, loyalty, and revenge. With powerful performances from the entire cast and impressive direction by Gibbins, the movie manages to keep viewers on the edge of their seats throughout.
Craig Sheffer's portrayal of Joe Fisk is particularly noteworthy. He brings an intensity and vulnerability to the character that makes him both relatable and compelling. Virginia Madsen is also impressive as Lisa, and their chemistry on screen is palpable.
The film is not without its flaws, however. Some of the dialogue can be clunky, and there are a few moments where the plot becomes a bit convoluted. However, the film's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. The action sequences are well crafted, and the movie features some impressive stunts and gun battles that keep the adrenaline pumping.
Overall, Fire with Fire is a gripping crime-drama that explores the consequences of revenge and the lengths people will go to protect those they love. With strong performances, impressive action scenes, and a well-crafted plot, it is a movie that is sure to entertain anyone who enjoys a good thriller.
