In the movie Field of Lost Shoes, we are transported back to the Civil War era, specifically the year 1864. The focus of the movie is on the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute and their role in the Battle of New Market. The movie opens with a scene of chaos and destruction as we see soldiers engaged in battle. We then see a group of young cadets from the Virginia Military Institute, who are being urged to join the fight by their teachers and superior officers. The cadets are initially hesitant, but eventually agree to join the fray.
The cadets are led by a young and inexperienced Lieutenant named John Wise (played by Max Lloyd-Jones). Wise is burdened by the weight of command and struggles to keep his young charges together as they make their way towards the battlefield.
We are then introduced to four of the cadets who become the main characters of the movie. These include Moses Ezekiel (played by Luke Benward), a Jewish cadet who dreams of becoming an artist; John Wise's younger brother (played by Tom Skerritt), who is also a cadet at the VMI; Sam Richmond (played by Nolan Gould), a cadet who is desperate to prove himself; and Rader (played by Joshua Brady), a cadet who is the voice of reason throughout the movie.
As the cadets make their way towards the battlefield, they are confronted with the harsh realities of war. They see dead bodies, burned-out homes, and hear the cries of wounded soldiers. They also meet a group of Confederate soldiers who are on their way to reinforce the Confederate army.
The cadets finally arrive at the battlefield, where they are met by a vastly superior Union army. The battle is fierce, and the cadets are forced to fight for their lives. They are also forced to confront their own fears and doubts, as they struggle to hold the line against the advancing Union soldiers.
Throughout the movie, we see the cadets grow and mature. They are no longer the untested boys who left the VMI at the beginning of the movie. They have become soldiers, willing to fight and die for their country.
One of the standout performances in the movie comes from Max Lloyd-Jones, who plays Lieutenant John Wise. Lloyd-Jones does an excellent job of portraying the weight of command and the toll it takes on Wise. He is also able to show the growth and maturity of the character as he leads his young charges into battle.
Another strong performance comes from Luke Benward, who plays Moses Ezekiel. Benward brings a depth and sensitivity to the character, and we see his dreams of becoming an artist juxtaposed against the horrors of war.
The movie also does an excellent job of portraying the brutality of war. We see the dead and wounded soldiers, the destruction of homes and property, and hear the cries of the wounded. The movie does not shy away from the brutality and violence of war, and we are left with a realistic portrayal of what it was like to fight on the front lines.
In conclusion, Field of Lost Shoes is a must-see movie for anyone interested in the Civil War or military history. The movie does an excellent job of portraying the experiences of the young cadets at the Virginia Military Institute and their role in the Battle of New Market. The performances from the cast are outstanding, and the movie does an excellent job of portraying the brutality and violence of war. Overall, Field of Lost Shoes is a powerful and moving movie that is not to be missed.
