Fat Kid Rules the World is a 2012 film that tells the story of a high-school student named Troy Billings (Jacob Wysocki), a morbidly obese teenager, who battles depression and suicidal tendencies throughout his life. Troy has been struggling with body image and insecurity issues, and his life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Marcus (Matt O'Leary), a charismatic and rebellious musician.
The film opens with Troy, who is in a park one evening, contemplating suicide. In a chance encounter, Marcus, a punk rock musician, saves Troy from what seems like an inevitable fate. Marcus offers to help Troy reinvent himself and become a drummer in his band. Although reluctant at first, Troy eventually agrees to give it a shot.
At first, Troy is hesitant and nervous about playing the drums, but with Marcus's encouragement and guidance, he starts to come out of his shell. Troy is initially attracted to Marcus's carefree attitude and the way he seems to care about nothing. Soon enough, however, he comes to realize that Marcus has his own set of problems and issues.
Marcus, it seems, is dealing with substance abuse and has a turbulent relationship with his girlfriend, Lydia (Lili Simmons). As Troy spends more time with Marcus, he becomes more confident and socially engaged. He starts to develop his own identity and makes friends outside the confines of his own home.
The film is a heartwarming coming-of-age tale that explores the themes of friendship, self-acceptance, and individuality. The director, Matthew Lillard, handles the issues of teen angst and self-image with sensitivity and nuance. The film is well-paced and engaging, with excellent performances from the entire cast.
Jacob Wysocki is excellent as Troy, bringing a depth and sincerity to his performance that makes the audience truly care about his character. Matt O'Leary is equally impressive as Marcus, infusing the character with a complex mix of charm and vulnerability. Lilli Simmons is also noteworthy in her portrayal of Lydia, who is dealing with her own demons while trying to hold her relationship with Marcus together.
Fat Kid Rules the World is a poignant and moving film that explores the struggles of adolescence with a refreshing honesty and authenticity. It is an uplifting tale that encourages viewers to embrace themselves for who they are, flaws and all. The film's message is clear: anyone can be a hero, no matter their size or shape.
