Family History is a heartwarming Filipino drama film released in 2019, directed and written by Michael V. The film follows the story of Alex Dela Cruz, played by Michael V., a happily married family man and a doctor by profession. His peaceful life, however, takes an unexpected turn when he is diagnosed with cancer. As he struggles to come to terms with his illness, he realizes that he has been hiding a big secret from his family. With his wife May, played by Dawn Zulueta, and their son Joshua, played by Miguel Tanfelix, he must now confront his past and come out with the truth.
The movie takes us back to Alex's childhood, where we meet his mother, played by Jaclyn Jose, a single parent who raised her son all by herself. Alex grew up believing that his father had abandoned them, but as he grows older, he begins to uncover the truth. Along the way, he discovers that his father, played by Nonie Buencamino, had dementia and could no longer recognize him. Despite this, Alex decides to spend time with his father and get to know him better.
As Alex's cancer progresses, he decides to reunite with his estranged father and introduce him to his family. The reunion, however, is not without its challenges as Alex's father finds it hard to adjust to his new surroundings. Alex and his family must navigate old wounds and resentments to find common ground and bring healing to their fractured family.
The film is a touching portrayal of the complexities of family relationships and the power of forgiveness. It tackles sensitive issues such as illness, death, and familial obligations with sensitivity and empathy. The performances of the cast are outstanding, particularly Michael V.'s portrayal of a man dealing with his mortality and the weight of his past mistakes. Dawn Zulueta also shines as his supportive and loving wife, bringing warmth and sincerity to her role.
Miguel Tanfelix, on the other hand, gives a charming and nuanced performance as the teenage son who finds his place in the family. The movie's emotional depth is further enhanced by the film's beautiful cinematography, music, and editing.
Overall, Family History is a must-watch for anyone who loves films about family, love, and the power of forgiveness. It is a poignant and uplifting movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
