Factory Girl is a 2006 biographical drama film directed by George Hickenlooper and starring Sienna Miller, Guy Pearce, and Hayden Christensen. The film tells the story of Edie Sedgwick, a young socialite who becomes a muse for the famous artist Andy Warhol. The movie begins with Edie Sedgwick leaving her privileged life behind in Santa Barbara and moving to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a famous model and actress. She quickly meets Andy Warhol and becomes one of his most prominent muses, appearing in many of his avant-garde films and paintings.
Although Edie is initially thrilled with her newfound fame and the attention she receives from Warhol and his entourage, she soon realizes that she is being exploited for her looks and vulnerability. As she becomes more deeply involved with Warhol and his Factory, she begins to spiral out of control, succumbing to drug addiction and self-destructive behavior.
Throughout the film, Edie's relationships with both Warhol and musician Billy Quinn (played by Hayden Christensen) are explored in depth. While Warhol sees Edie as purely a means to an end, Billy genuinely cares for her and tries to help her break free from the destructive cycle she has fallen into.
Sienna Miller delivers a powerful performance as Edie, capturing both her exuberant spirit and her inner turmoil as she struggles to find her own identity in the midst of Warhol's chaotic world. Guy Pearce is equally compelling as Warhol, portraying him as a mercurial and manipulative figure who is ultimately unable to connect with the people he uses for his art.
In addition to the excellent performances, Factory Girl is notable for its depiction of the gritty, counter-culture scene of the 1960s. The film captures the anti-establishment spirit of the era and the way in which Warhol and his Factory acted as a hub for creative experimentation and social change.
However, the film also exposes the darker side of this world, as Edie and others succumb to drug addiction, exploitation, and despair. Despite its ultimately tragic ending, Factory Girl is a powerful and thought-provoking film that sheds light on a fascinating moment in history and the people who helped shape it.
Factory Girl is a 2006 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3 and a MetaScore of 45.
