Exorcist The Beginning is a prequel to the classic horror movie, The Exorcist. A much younger Father Lankester Marrin who witnessed Nazi Germany committing genocide to innocent people of the world struggles with his religious beliefs. Father Marrin decides to devote his whole life to archaeology heads to Africa to work his passion. While Father Lancaster Marrin is in Cairo, he meets with a collector of artifacts and decides to join him in an excavation of a Christian Byzantine church built in 500 A.D.
Father Marrin is very intrigued by finding strange things inside the church like statues of angels pointing the arrows down instead of how angels are usually pointing the spears in the direction of the heavens. They suspect something very significant happened at this church.
Things start to get bizarre when Father Marrin finds out that the lead archaeologist went insane a few days prior and is at a mental hospital. When Father Marrin visits him, he finds that Monsieur Bession, the lead Archaeologist has carved a Swastika in his chest and is talking in a possessed voice of a SS commander that Father Marrin knew in world war two.
Here is where father Geonetti presents roman rituals that Father Marrin can use against possessed individuals. However, Father Marrin is still skeptical. After Father Marrin gets back to the dig-site strange things around the site start to happen. A pack of hyenas that patrol the dig site constantly killed a boy. Their yelps and fighting take a mental toll on the people working the site. Father Francis tells Father Marrin no records at the Vatican show this church existing. An Older record of a temple lies underneath the church. As the team digs, they find artifacts of the temple that are demonic. This is when Father Marrin finds the demon Pazuzu, who is the demon that he confronts in the original movie, “The Exorcist.” Father Marrin and a boy is all that is left, of course there is always Pazuzu.
